Muralee Thummarukudi, Former Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction in the UN Environment Programme was one of the few persons who weren’t as surprised as others with the flood calamities that occurred in Kerala. The far-sighted man had seen it coming, had spoken about it much before it occurred. Now Muralee has predicted about more havoc to come in the coming days and these sound scary.

Muralee opined that the havoc of media, volunteers, people who make Assessments, food items etc are about to follow the rain havoc. He exhorts the government machinery to be ready to face it.
He talks about the possible influx of media from both India and abroad. The food items and medicines that will come to Kerala in huge containers could end up being surplus. He remembers how we had to bury medicines after the Tsunami incident. The ‘Need Assessment’ officers who come to assess what all kinds of stuff are facing scarcity in different places could spell another havoc, he says. NGO agencies of different countries, to be able to send medicines require this need assessment to be done.
Muralee also warns above the over-abundance of volunteers. He remembers how there were about 1400 voluntary organisations in Haiti a week after the earthquake. UN struggled to provide accommodation for all of them. He says people who have no experience in containing such a situation will come up with different opinions which can be counted as another issue.
There wil be tourists who come to just see the aftermaths of the calamity and Muralee says that to contain all kinds of these havocs to follow, we need a proper team. Knowing well his expertise in the field and his farsightedness in such issues, Kerala should listen to Murali’s words .
