According to a statement from the police headquarters, state police chief Loknath Behera has directed all the police personnel to lead the cleaning work. The 40,000-odd police personnel who were involved in the rescue operations will participate in the cleaning drives also.
The affected families would have to put in a lot of efforts to make the houses livable. Hence, the police would also take part in the process. The support of voluntary organisations would also be sought, said the statement.
The DGP also directed the police personnel to be alert against robbery attempts at vacant houses. The local police were asked to conduct frequent patrolling during day and night at flood-affected areas to curb law and order issues.
Police sources said that many wealthy families had to leave their houses without properly locking the doors in view of the floods. Hence, there were instances of suspicious people entering the houses on the pretext of rescue operations and stealing costly items.
The state police could rescue about 53,000 people from the ravaged areas. The rescue operation was code named ‘Jala Raksha’ and all units of the police had actively participated in the operations in coordination with the central forces.
