CPI(M) MLA Raju Abraham Says Proper Warnings About the Opening of Dams Were Not Given on Time

Pathanamthitta: CPI(M) MLA Raju Abraham said that there were serious flaws in giving proper warnings about the opening of dams. “I was at Pamba river shore on August 14. I had called revenue officers and asked to them give warnings about the water level in Pamba rising alarmingly and that a flood could happen. But the official warning never came. If proper instructions were given on time, people could have been more vigilant and the extent of damage could have been mitigated. People would have got more time to move their materials and vacate their home. “.

Raju said on August 15th that he called Chief Minister and as per his instructions, two dams were closed temporarily which prevented a bigger damage. He added that if those dams were not closed, in Ranni alone, about 7000 people could have gone with the flood.

Raju Abraham felt that when depression formed over Orissa, then itself a red alert should have been given to all states in Kerala.   He said there were exemplary precautions taken in opening Idukki dam but the same vigil wasn’t seen in the case of Sabarigiri,Kakki and Aanathod dams. He felt that serious mistakes happened and that an inquiry on the same should be initiated soon.
