In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday, Kerala Government had placed the blame of the massive floods that claimed the lives of 373 people on the shoulders of the Tamil Nadu government and its refusal to lower the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam. While this is true or not will be revealed in the coming days after the close examination, but Tamilnadu’ request to maintain the water level at 142 feet was rejected by Supreme court. S.C asked to keep the water level at 139 feet. Earlier, Tamilnadu had reduced the opening of the shutter from 6 feet to 3 feet.

Centre too had taken the stand to reduce the water level in a step by step fashion. The government also pointed out how Tamil Nadu government repeatedly rejected its request to reduce the water level in the dam from 142 feet to 139 feet. On account of the huge rains that hit Idukki, the sluice gates of the dam were opened after the water level touched 142 feet mark on August 15.
The affidavit said, “The sudden release from Mullaperiyar Dam, which is the third largest reservoir in the Periyar basin, forced the Kerala government to release more water from Idukki reservoir, which is one of the main causes of the deluge.”How much Tamilnadu’s obstinacy to maintain the water level at 142 feet has cost Kerala will be revealed in the coming days.
