A Mumbai special court convicted an Arabic teacher at a mosque for sexually assaulting a student on Monday. The victim, who in 2018 was in the fourth standard, would attend Arabic classes at a nearby mosque after school. She has alleged that there her teacher would send all students home and then used to touch her inappropriately. The teacher had also threatened her against revealing anything by saying that he would kill her mother.
However, the girl mustered courage and told her friends in school about the perpetrator. They did not know how to tell this to the class teacher so the victim and her friends wrote a letter to the teacher. The class teacher, whose statement was recorded by the court too said that on March 19, 2018, four students including the victim had come to meet her before their class and given her a letter describing the horror. The teacher accepted that she did not take action immediately. She said, “I was in a hurry so I kept the letter in my purse.”
The teacher returned home and forgot about it. The next day she asked the victim if the contents of the letter were right. But even after the victim had confirmed the same to the teacher, she did not immediately call the victim’s mother due to an annual day programme in the school. The teacher eventually only informed the victim’s mother on March 16, 2018.
The class teacher informed the parents and the parents immediately took the victim to the mosque. At the time there were three Arabic teachers in the mosque but the victim identified the perpetrator. A case was registered and the trial began. In court, the victim’s friend too testified and spoke about how they had written the letter and identified that letter as an important piece of evidence. She told the court that the victim used to cry in class but could not reveal it to her family. She also said that it was she who had written the letter.
