Police had arrested an opposition MLA of Assam for making objectionable remarks about the conditions of quarantine facilities and calling it worst than detention camps.
According to the reports, police had arrested All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Amin-ul-Islam in Nagaon district on Tuesday morning.
A case has been registered at Nagaon Sadar police station against the MLA under section 120(B), 150(A), 124(A), 295(A) of IPC.
An audio clip containing a telephonic conversation between the AIUDF MLA and a person went viral on social media.
Nagaon district Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip said that, during interrogation, the MLA admitted that, he had made the controversial and communal audio clip and forwarded it to many others.
“Following a complaint, we called the MLA on Monday evening for interrogation and we also seized his mobile phone. We had found the audio clip on his mobile phone. He admitted that he made the audio clip and forwarded it to many other people. After receiving all evidence, we had arrested him at around 1 am on Tuesday. We will also take action against those who circulated the controversial audio clip,” the top police official said.
Meanwhile, police had produced the AIUDF MLA before a local court in Nagaon and the court sent him to judicial custody.
Earlier, the AIUDF MLA had also made some objectionable remarks over the Nizamuddin Markaz event.
He claimed that nobody from the Tablighi Jamaat attendees had tested positive for COVID-19 and the quarantine centres set up by the government are worst than detention camps and it is a government conspiracy to kill a section of people.
He was charged with an attempt to communalise the government’s effort to combat the COVID-19 outbreak and also criticising the government’s initiative.
