Coronavirus Lockdown : Pinarayi Govt set to reopen liquor shops in Kerala

Kerala has decided to reopen liquor stores and barber shops in the state from May 20.

Kerala has, however, postponed examinations for schools and colleges following the directive of the Centre. The decision was taken by the review committee chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday morning.

“We have reviewed the Covid situation in the state and decided to open liquor outlets and barber shops from May 20. But beauty parlours will remain closed till further notice,” a senior official told India Today.

“The examinations for school and college students are postponed. For inter-district travel, pass from police will be required,” the senior official said.

While Kerala allowed bars, beer and wine parlours to sell liquor as parcels, it imposed restrictions on the purchase of liquor. The person who wishes to buy liquor will first have to register on an app. The QR code on the mobile will then be verified by outlets while the purchase is made.

Kerala has 301 state run liquor outlets, 316 three star bar hotels, 225 four stars, 51 five stars, 11 heritage hotel bars and 359 beer parlours. All bars and wine parlours have been directed to sell liquor at the rate of Bevco outlets and will not be allowed to charge rates as per their star status.

Kerala closed down liquor outlets on March 24 after the lockdown was announced. Seven persons have committed suicide in the state during lockdown after they couldn’t purchase liquor.
