India has registered 28,652 new cases of novel coronavirus since Monday evening, taking the countries Covid-19 tally past the 15 lakh-mark.
A PTI tally of data reported by states by evening puts the total number of Covid-19 cases in India at 15,06,380. The Union Health Ministry site is likely to reflect the new numbers by Wednesday morning.
In its most recent update, the Union Health Ministry placed the total number of cases at 14,83,156 and the death toll at 33,425. The ministry said that 9,52,743 people have so far recovered from the infection.
With 3,83,723 cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state. The state with the second-highest number of cases is Tamil Nadu. Despite a slow spread at the beginning of the pandemic, Tamil Nadu has reported over 2.2 lakh cases of Covid-19 so far. Other states with over 1 lakh cases are Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka.
According to the Centre, the country’s Covid-19 fatality rate has progressively declined to 2.25 per cent from 3.33 per cent on June 18, while the recovery rate increased from around 53 per cent in mid-June to more than 64 per cent now.
In a statement earlier in the day, the Union Health Ministry said that the focused efforts on early detection and isolation along with handholding of states and UTs by expert teams of AIIMS, New Delhi for efficient clinical management of hospitalised cases and periodic visits of central teams, have borne results with continuously improving recovery rate.
