PNB Fraud Case: Nirav Modi’s extradition trial to begin Today

London : The five-day extradition trial of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi to face charges of major financial offences in India is set to begin in London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday until September 11, with objections, arguments and counter-arguments made so far resonating with those in the case of businessman Vijay Mallya.

The second phase of the extradition trial of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi will begin in London from Monday.

In the five-day extradition trial from September 7 to September 12, the 49-year-old jeweller who has been lodged at Wandsworth Prison in southwest London — one of England’s most overcrowded jails — since his arrest in March 2019, will appear for the second leg of his extradition trial at a UK court via videolink.

He is fighting extradition charges related to the estimated USD $2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case brought by the Indian government, being represented at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of the UK.

The charges include intimidation of witnesses and tampering of evidence. This will be an extension to the first phase of the trial held in May 2020 on the first extradition request, where charges of fraud and money laundering were discussed.

During the last case management hearing on August 27, Nirav Modi’s team had informed the court that they are considering putting an application for media restrictions. It was alleged that the former high court judge of India, Abhay Thipsay, who appeared in capacity as legal witness in the May phase of the extradition trial, was wrongly accused of defending Nirav Modi.
