The death toll from Assam’s worsening flood and landslide situation reached 80 on Tuesday, while 34 districts continued to be affected, affecting 47,72,140 people in the last 24 hours. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the floods claimed 10 more lives, including two police officers, and 2,31,819 people were sheltered in relief camps in the state within the last 24 hours.
While trying to rescue marooned people trapped in floods, a police officer and a constable were swept away by the raging currents of the Kopili River. At various places, the water in five rivers – the Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, and Puthimari – is flowing above the danger level.
On Tuesday, four units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with a total of 105 personnel and modern life-saving equipment were dispatched to the Barak Valley to undertake rescue operations. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Home Minister Amit Shah for the quick response on Twitter. ‘Grateful to Honble HM @AmitShah for such prompt action and help,’ he wrote.
