Russian President Vladimir Putin is concerned about the “spark of democracy” spreading to his country, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who also claims Putin is attempting to divide Europe and return to a world governed by spheres of influence.
Scholz was responding to a question on whether Putin would support Ukraine moving closer to the European Union in an interview with the Muenchner Merkur newspaper, which was published on the government website on Monday.
‘The Russian President must understand that in his neighbourhood, there is a group of law-based democracies that is getting ever closer together,’ he said. ‘Clearly, he is concerned about the spread of democracy in his country.’
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, responded to the comments on social media, writing: ‘A couple of times, German sparks have landed on us. No more fires will be tolerated.’
