In another ambitious infrastructure initiative by India, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has commenced the construction of a high-altitude road in the Ladakh region. This new road is poised to claim the title of the world’s highest motorable road pass, surpassing its own previous achievement. The project’s inception coincided with India’s 77th Independence Day and is situated in the Demchok area of Ladakh.
The forthcoming Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road, located near Hanle in Eastern Ladakh, will span a length of 64 kilometers. At its zenith, the road will reach an astounding altitude of 19,400 feet, positioning it as the world’s loftiest motorable road once completed. Presently, the record-holder for the world’s highest motorable road is the Umling La road in Ladakh, constructed by the BRO, at a height of 19,024 feet. This 52-kilometer road links Chishumle to Demchok along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the disputed boundary between India and China.
Nevertheless, the upcoming Likaru-Fukche road will be situated three kilometers away from the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. As reported by the media, a group of female BRO engineers embarked on the construction process earlier this week.
The BRO announced via its Twitter account on the 77th Independence Day, “On the occasion of 77th Independence Day @BROindia starts construction on yet another strategic road, Road Likaru-Mig La-Fukche. This road will pass through an altitude of 19,400 feet and will be the world’s highest motorable road surpassing the Umling La Pass.”
The initiation of the Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road project coincides with an enduring military standoff between India and China along the LAC in the Ladakh sector, spanning over three years. Numerous rounds of discussions, including recent Major-General level talks, have been undertaken to address the issues at Depsang Plains and CNN Junction near Demchok, which persist as contentious areas between the two nations. Furthermore, the 19th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting recently transpired at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point in Ladakh’s Leh district, an Indian Union Territory.
In a conversation with news agency ANI, Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General of BRO, highlighted that the upcoming road will expedite troop deployment in critical situations. Additionally, the BRO official mentioned that the Indian Prime Minister is soon to inaugurate the Sela tunnel, which will be the world’s highest and longest bi-lane tunnel. Moreover, the Shinku La tunnel, which will surpass China’s Mi La tunnel in height, and the Nyoma Airfield, slated to be one of the highest airfields globally upon completion, are also part of BRO’s future projects.
