Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways’ Transformational Leader, Announces Departure

Qatar Airways’ longstanding chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, is set to step down from his role at the state-owned airline, as reported by Qatari local media on Monday. According to reports that referenced a memo to staff, Baker, who led the firm for over 25 years, is scheduled to step down on November 5.

Aviation analyst Alex Macheras took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share that the outgoing Qatar Airways chief conveyed to staff, “it has been an incredible privilege to lead such an exceptional global team, and the honour of a lifetime to serve my country.” However, Qatar Airways has not yet responded to requests for comment from AFP.

Baker is widely recognized for his pivotal role in transforming the fortunes of the fledgling airline, which he assumed control of in 1997, elevating it into a globally esteemed carrier.

In an unexpected development, Qatari authorities announced on Sunday that Baker had been removed from another position he held as the chairman of the gas-rich emirate’s tourism body, though no reason for this decision was provided.
