In some assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh, a unique electoral scenario is unfolding as members of the same family, despite their different political affiliations, find themselves competing for power. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress have fielded candidates from within these families, setting the stage for intra-family political battles in the upcoming November 17 elections for the 230-member assembly.
In one instance, Sitasharan Sharma, a former assembly speaker representing the BJP, is contesting from Narmadapuram. His opponent is none other than his own brother, Girijashankar Sharma, who now represents the Congress. Girijashankar, previously a BJP MLA, switched sides to join the Congress after being denied a BJP ticket. Another such electoral showdown is in the Sagar assembly constituency, where Nidhi Sunil Jain, representing the Congress, is facing her brother-in-law, the incumbent BJP MLA Shailendra Jain. Nidhi Jain is married to Shailendra Jain’s younger brother, Sunil Jain, who formerly served as a Congress MLA from Deori. These familial rivalries underscore the complex and intriguing dynamics of politics in Madhya Pradesh.
