The cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ has strengthened into a severe cyclone, but Odisha is not anticipated to face significant impacts as it traverses the state’s coastline from a distance of approximately 200 km, according to the Meteorological Department. The IMD reported that ‘Hamoon’ is likely to further intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm within the next few hours as it advances across the Bay of Bengal at a speed of 21 kmph. Subsequently, as the system moves northeastward, it is expected to gradually weaken and is projected to make landfall along the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong on Tuesday evening as a cyclonic storm, with wind speeds ranging from 65-75 kmph, gusting up to 85 kmph, as stated by the weather office.
At 5:30 AM, ‘Hamoon’ was positioned approximately 230 km east-southeast of Paradip in Odisha, 240 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal, 280 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh, and 410 km southwest of Chittagong in Bangladesh. An official from the Meteorological Department mentioned that since the cyclone’s path keeps it about 200 km away from the Odisha coast, the state is not likely to experience any significant impact, apart from light to moderate rainfall in coastal areas.
