‘Leo’ Triumphs Over ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ in Global Box Office Battle

Tamil superstar Vijay, featured in Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Tamil-language film ‘Leo: Bloody Sweet,’ had a remarkable global box office debut, securing third place with an estimated $31.2 million worldwide over the past weekend, as reported by Comscore. The top spot of the weekend belonged to Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, which brought in $44 million. ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ closely followed with a strong performance at $41.5 million, according to ‘Variety.’

However, when it comes to worldwide cumulative earnings among recent releases, ‘Leo’ surpassed ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ collecting $48.5 million in its first four days, compared to the latter’s $44 million. ‘Leo’ pays homage to David Cronenberg’s 2005 film ‘A History of Violence’ and was released on October 19.

The action-thriller revolves around a mild-mannered cafe owner portrayed by Vijay, who is compelled to confront his violent past. The ensemble cast includes Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Madonna Sebastian, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Priya Anand, and Mathew Thomas.

The film is produced by S.S. Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy for Seven Screen Studio.

In the United States, ‘Leo’ was distributed by Prathyangira Cinemas and grossed $2.1 million over the weekend. In the U.K. and Ireland, Ahimsa Entertainment released the film, earning $1.3 million in its first three days.

‘Leo’ is the latest installment in Kanagaraj’s Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), which commenced with ‘Kaithi’ (2019), continued with ‘Vikram’ in 2022, and retroactively included the 1986 title ‘Vikram.’ Characters from ‘Kaithi’ and the 2022 ‘Vikram’ make appearances in ‘Leo.’ This marks the second collaboration between Vijay, known to his fans as ‘Thalapathy’ (commander), and Kanagaraj, following their successful work on ‘Master,’ which grossed $36 million. Vijay subsequently starred in ‘Beast’ (2022) and ‘Varisu’ (2023), both of which achieved similar box office success to ‘Master.’
