In the North Sea, a collision between two cargo ships has left multiple individuals missing, with one of the vessels reportedly having sunk, as confirmed by German authorities on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) southwest of Helgoland Island, as reported by the German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies. Several ships are presently engaged in search and rescue operations in the area.
One person has been successfully rescued from the water and is currently undergoing medical treatment. The ship believed to have sunk is identified as the Verity, sailing under the British flag and en route from Bremen to the British town of Immingham. The other vessel involved is the Polesie, registered under the Bahamas flag, and was traveling from Hamburg to La Coruna in Spain. The Verity, a smaller ship measuring 91 meters (almost 300 feet) in length, contrasts with the Polesie, which is 190 meters long. The Polesie remains afloat with 22 individuals on board, as confirmed by the agency.
Numerous resources are actively participating in the search and rescue efforts, including two rescue cruisers, an emergency tug, a pilot boat, a police patrol boat, and a helicopter. Additionally, a cruise ship that was in the vicinity has been enlisted to assist in these operations, as reported by the agency.
