Sri Lanka has unveiled a free visa initiative for travelers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and Indonesia, spanning a generous five-month period. The announcement was conveyed by Ali Sabry, the nation’s Foreign Affairs Minister, on a Tuesday. This visa-free travel provision is effective immediately and is set to persist until March 31 of the following year.
Minister Ali Sabry shared his perspective on this development, stating, “This is enacted as a pilot project through March 31.”
Sri Lanka, a nation heavily reliant on tourism, has been grappling with a series of setbacks stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and challenges in implementing agricultural reforms. Recently, the Ministry of Tourism disclosed that a Cabinet Paper was presented during the preceding Cabinet meeting, proposing the notion of granting complimentary tourist visas to entice more visitors to the country.
