The UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, has reported that six of its staff members were tragically killed in Gaza within a span of 24 hours. This brings the total number of UNRWA staff members killed since October 7 to 35. The ongoing Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, which began in response to attacks by Hamas militants, has not spared humanitarian and aid workers. During this period, at least 16 health workers have also lost their lives while on duty.
UNRWA plays a vital role in supporting the 5.6 million Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The conflict in the region has resulted in a significant loss of life, with more than 5,000 people reported dead due to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, as stated by the Hamas-run health ministry. Israel’s response to the October 7 attacks, which officials claim killed more than 1,400 people, has escalated the situation, and there have been preparations for a potential full-scale ground invasion of the densely populated Palestinian enclave.
