In order to protest what they dubbed the ‘indiscriminate and unprovoked firing’ on Kuki women in Kangpokpi a few days ago, hundreds of women staged a sit-in protest in Manipur.
In Kangpokpi district, the protesters—most of whom were female—gathered along National Highway 2 to demand justice for the allegedly lethal shooting of Kuki-Zo women on October 16 when they were on night duty.
According to a statement made by the Kuki tribal collective, on the evening of October 16, at around 7:00 pm, some armed criminals driving fast along National Highway 2 towards Dimapur opened fire on the women working the night shift at Kangpokpi bazaar with several rounds of ammunition before fleeing the scene.
In the midst of the ongoing upheaval in Manipur, the demonstrators demanded the earliest resolution to the attack against the Kuki-Zo people while yelling chants like ‘We don’t want bullets’ and ‘We want a separate administration.’
‘Let us live in peace in Kuki Zoland,’ and other statements like ‘We are your mothers, show respect’ and ‘Apologies to the Women of Kangpokpi’ were written on the placards held by protesters.
The protesters also stated that they had been unable to sleep the prior several nights due to their dread of additional assaults. The miscreants were urged to voluntarily surrender to the Kangpokpi Town Committee on or before October 20 by local organisations operating under the authority of the Kangpokpi Town Committee, according to a notice posted on several social media platforms.
To date, nobody has, however, taken responsibility for the attack.
