ICMR’s confirmation of Nipah virus presence in bat samples from Wayanad has prompted the health department to issue a vigilance call. These samples were collected in Bathery and Mananthawadi. Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, assured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern. However, the information has been shared to raise awareness and take precautionary measures.
To increase awareness and readiness, the health department plans to provide training for health workers in Wayanad and educate the public. The presence of Nipah was detected through ongoing monitoring efforts, and Veena George emphasized that similar studies are being conducted in other districts. In light of this information, she urged people to refrain from consuming fruits that may have been pecked at by birds and advised against ignoring any potential symptoms. Notably, this marks the fourth instance of Nipah virus being reported in the state, with the latest case occurring in Kozhikode in September.
