Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar marveled at Glenn Maxwell’s explosive performance in the World Cup match against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Maxwell’s blazing century, achieved in just 40 balls, left Gavaskar awestruck. In the 40th over, Maxwell entered the fray and proceeded to score 106 runs from 44 deliveries, featuring nine fours and eight sixes. This astounding feat shattered the previous record set by South Africa’s Aiden Markram, who had scored a 49-ball hundred at the same venue in this edition of the tournament.
Speaking to Star Sports after the innings, Gavaskar was visibly thrilled by Maxwell’s display. He specifically lauded Maxwell’s unconventional reverse hit, remarking, “This one (reverse hit) has got to be one of the greatest cricketing shots. It’s gone for six. It should be a 12. The bowling after that got a bit rattled because they just didn’t know where to bowl. It was an incredible effort. He had an average of 12, to score the runs that he did and at the rate at which he did. It was amazing,” Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar also humorously contrasted Maxwell’s century with his own experience, saying, “I took 40 balls to get off the mark. He has scored a hundred in 40 balls, amazing, amazing.”
Maxwell had faced a lean period in India, managing just 49 runs in the first four matches for Australia. However, he demonstrated remarkable control and dominance during this innings, peppering the V part of the ground with blistering shots.
