A recent report, based on Delhi Police data, has brought to light a substantial increase of 53.8% in complaints related to fake profiles and identity theft in the Indian capital, New Delhi. According to the Times of India, this surge in complaints has been particularly prominent in the year 2023, with 2,721 cases of reported fake profiles or impersonation, and 2,959 instances of profile hacking and identity theft registered by the police until August.
Comparatively, during the same period in 2022, a total of 1,717 complaints related to fake profiles and impersonation had been recorded. Additionally, there were 1,976 reported cases of profile hacking and identity theft in the national capital during that time. The report also highlighted that in some instances, fraudsters posed as law enforcement officials, deceiving individuals and making threats of ‘legal action.’ Furthermore, the accused have been known to create counterfeit company websites to attract people with the promise of lucrative investments, only to take their money and subsequently remove the websites.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and verify the identity of the individuals or entities they engage with, especially when making financial transactions to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent activities.
