Corey Seager delivered a powerful two-run home run that propelled the Texas Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the World Series.
Seager’s incredible 421-foot homer soared over the right field wall in the third inning, following an earlier RBI from Marcus Semien, who drove in Nathaniel Lowe in the same inning.
The Diamondbacks had previously defeated the Texas Rangers 9-1 in Arlington, leveling the best-of-seven World Series. However, the narrative was quite different on Monday as Major League Baseball’s premier championship returned to Arizona for game three.
The Rangers faced an early setback when their starter, Max Scherzer, left the mound after only 36 scoreless pitches due to a suspected back injury. This unexpected situation forced Jon Gray, who was slated to start in game four, to come out of the bullpen and take over.
Gray played a pivotal role in preserving the Rangers’ three-run lead, delivering three scoreless innings. The Texas pitchers remained in control of the game.
Seager praised Gray’s contribution, referring to him as the hero of the night, highlighting his ability to keep the Diamondbacks off balance and prevent them from scoring.
For Gray, it was all about taking a one-pitch-at-a-time approach after being unexpectedly thrust into the game following Scherzer’s injury. He emphasized the importance of executing each pitch effectively and staying focused.
As the game progressed, Josh Sborz took over as a reliever for the Rangers and struck out two batters. Aroldis Chapman stepped in for the eighth inning.
Arizona mounted a potential comeback in the bottom of the eighth when Geraldo Perdomo’s single to left field allowed Emmanuel Rivera to score a run, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
However, a brilliant defensive play by Seager set up a double play that effectively halted the Diamondbacks’ rally. Perdomo was tagged out at second base, and Ketel Marte was out at first, ending the inning.
The Rangers’ lineup couldn’t extend their lead in the ninth inning, leaving Rangers closer Jose Leclerc with the task of securing the final three outs, which he did by getting Gabriel Moreno to ground out and striking out Christian Walker and Tommy Pham.
The upcoming Game four will be held in Phoenix on Tuesday.
