A special task force, appointed by the state government to oversee the removal of encroachments in the district, successfully reclaimed 7.7 acres of land in Chinnakkanal on Monday. This action follows allegations that the eviction efforts primarily targeted ordinary citizens while ignoring large-scale encroachments. Led by Idukki sub-collector Arun S Nair, a team of officials initiated the eviction proceedings in the morning and placed a government ownership notice in the area. According to sources within the revenue department, Tissan Thachankary had unlawfully occupied the 7.7-acre land adjacent to his catering college in Chinnakkanal, even constructing a boys’ hostel on the property. Officials have issued a notice demanding the evacuation of the hostel building within 30 days.
Despite media personnel and public representatives rushing to the scene upon learning of the eviction process, the task force members barred them from entering the premises. In response to this action by the revenue team, Chinnakkanal panchayat president Sreekumar criticized the department’s inconsistent approach in dealing with ordinary individuals and large-scale encroachers. This situation underscores the ongoing controversy surrounding land encroachments and the government’s efforts to address them in the district.
