Rugby Australia (RA) officially confirmed on Tuesday that they have accepted Eddie Jones’ resignation as the coach of the Wallabies. This announcement comes after Jones revealed to The Australian newspaper on Sunday that he had reached an agreement with RA regarding his departure, even though he had previously stated less than two weeks ago that he intended to honor his contract to lead the Wallabies to the 2027 World Cup, which Australia is hosting.
In its statement, RA expressed gratitude for Eddie Jones’ dedication to the Wallabies in 2023 and extended best wishes for his future endeavors. They also mentioned that information concerning the future coaching staff for the Wallabies would be disclosed in due course.
Phil Waugh, the CEO of RA, will conduct a media conference at 2 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) on Tuesday. Eddie Jones had been appointed in January with great enthusiasm. Under his leadership, the Wallabies participated in the World Cup in France, although they experienced the ignominy of exiting the tournament during the group stage for the first time in their history.
Eddie Jones’ departure has sparked extensive criticism of RA’s leadership. This is particularly significant because RA had previously dismissed former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie, who had one year remaining on his contract, in order to hire Eddie Jones. RA’s chairman, Hamish McLennan, stated to the Australian media on Monday that he had no intentions of resigning in the wake of Jones’ inability to revitalize the team. He instead attributed the Wallabies’ troubles to the shortcomings of the nation’s “rugby system.”
