Opposition Leaders Claim ‘State-Backed iPhone Attacks’ Amid Apple Warnings

Apple issued security alerts to opposition leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, Akhilesh Yadav, Mahua Moitra, Pawan Khera, Raghav Chadha, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and Sitaram Yechury, raising concerns of potential iPhone attacks. These leaders claim their devices are under siege by ‘state-sponsored attackers.’

Apple clarified that they couldn’t pinpoint the specific origin of these threats, citing the attackers’ sophistication and funding. Detecting such attacks remains a challenging task.

Mahua Moitra expressed her concerns on social media, stating, “Received text and email from Apple warning me that the government is trying to hack into my phone and email.” She called out the Home Minister’s Office and others who may be involved.

Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena also highlighted the issue and expressed her dismay, demanding attention from relevant authorities.

Pawan Khera, a Congress Working Committee member, questioned the government’s actions and shared a screenshot of the warning message.

The email alert from Apple emphasized the seriousness of state-sponsored attacks, warning of potential access to sensitive data, communications, and even device cameras and microphones.

This development coincided with the Delhi High Court hearing a defamation suit filed by Mahua Moitra against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai. The Ethics Committee had summoned Moitra to appear before it, and the investigation is related to allegations of accepting cash and favors for asking questions in Lok Sabha concerning businessman Gautam Adani. The panel also received oral evidence from Dubey and Dehadrai regarding the case.
