Santiago: A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck off the coast of northern Chile. The tremors were felt in several provinces of neighbouring Argentina.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 42 kilometres southwest of Huasco, a city in Chile’s Atacama region. The earthquake had a depth of 35 kilometres . There were no immediate reports of damage and there is no tsunami risk.

Chile is located in the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific and experiences frequent earthquakes. In 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami claimed 526 lives.
