CERT-In Investigates Apple Threat, Issues Notice

CERT-In initiated an investigation and issued a notice to Apple regarding the raised concerns about threat notifications, as confirmed by IT Secretary S. Krishnan on Thursday. He expressed optimism that Apple would cooperate with CERT-In during the investigation, stating, “CERT-In has started its probe… they (Apple) will cooperate in this probe,” during a discussion with reporters at an event related to the Meity-NSF research collaboration.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, known as CERT-In, serves as the national authority for addressing computer security incidents as they arise. When asked whether a notice had been dispatched to Apple, the IT Secretary confirmed in the affirmative.

On Tuesday, several opposition leaders reported receiving alerts from Apple cautioning them about “state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise” their iPhones and alleged government-backed hacking. This accusation was refuted by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who pledged a thorough investigation.

Among those who received these notifications were prominent figures such as Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, K C Venugopal, Supriya Shrinate, T S Singhdeo, and Bhupinder S Hooda. Additionally, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav reported similar alerts from Apple.
