Imphal Remains Calm but Tense Following Mob Assault on Manipur Rifles Camp

Imphal, the capital of Manipur, witnessed a state of relative calm but lingering tension on Thursday, following an incident the previous day when security forces fired multiple warning shots into the air to disperse a massive crowd of over 2,000 individuals attempting to pilfer weapons from the 1 Manipur Rifles camp. While several markets in the city remained closed, educational institutions, government offices, and the Manipur High Court continued their regular operations. After a curfew relaxation commencing at 10 am, vehicles were observed back on the roads. Additional state and central forces were deployed at key intersections, and police personnel were actively patrolling the vicinity near the Manipur Rifles camp.

The state police confirmed on Thursday that the previous day’s endeavor by armed miscreants to seize arms and ammunition at the 1st MR Battalion was effectively thwarted by combined security forces. The mob had targeted the Manipur Rifles camp, situated in close proximity to the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s Office in Imphal West district. Responding to the situation, district authorities in Imphal East and West promptly revoked the daily curfew relaxation from 5 am to 10 pm. The District Magistrate in Imphal East relaxed the curfew restrictions from 10 am to 6 pm on Thursday, with a similar relaxation in Imphal West from 10 am to 5 pm. However, government orders clarified that while “movement restrictions were relaxed from 10 am to 6 pm on Thursday,” this relaxation did not extend to “gatherings or large-scale movement of individuals or unlawful sit-in protests or rallies.”
