Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, has unveiled the country’s ambitious plans for digital transformation. Speaking at a recent global AI summit in London, Chandrasekhar highlighted India’s substantial progress in digitizing its economy over the past eight years, with the goal of increasing digital contributions from 4.5 percent to approximately 20 percent of the total GDP by 2025-26.
Presently, about 11 percent of India’s GDP is digital. Chandrasekhar emphasized that the digital economy and the innovation sector are growing at a rate 2.5 to 3 times faster than the non-digital portion of the GDP. The summit, which brought together international digital ministers, tech leaders, academics, and civil society representatives, focused on the collective risks associated with emerging AI technology and potential strategies for mitigation.
Chandrasekhar underscored the importance of international cooperation and dialogues among nations, asserting their pivotal role in shaping the future of technology. He stressed that the future of technology, whether it pertains to innovation, partnerships, or regulatory frameworks, should be guided by a coalition of nations rather than relying solely on one or two countries. Chandrasekhar also highlighted the significance of digital advancements as tangible objectives and described artificial intelligence as a catalyst capable of accelerating growth, governance, and the digital economy.
