Iranian mother demanding justice for her son killed by security officials sent to prison for 13 years

An Iranian mother who was seeking justice for her son, who was killed by security officials, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. Mahsa Yazdani has been found guilty of multiple charges, including blasphemy, incitement, insulting the supreme leader, and spreading anti-regime propaganda, according to human rights organizations and family members.

During the first five years of her prison term, Yazdani will not be eligible for parole, as reported by her attorney, Meysam Mousavi. The charges against her include a five-year sentence for “blasphemy,” an additional five years for “incitement against national security,” two years for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran,” and one more year for “spreading propaganda against the regime.” These add up to a total of 13 years.

Yazdani had been running an online campaign seeking justice for her 20-year-old son, Mohammad Javad Zahedi, who was killed during an anti-regime protest in September 2022. Zahedi was allegedly shot and wounded by security forces while protesting the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who had died in police custody after being detained for violating Iran’s mandatory headscarf law. Unfortunately, Zahedi succumbed to his injuries after emergency services failed to provide adequate treatment, as reported by Iran International. A medical examiner’s report confirmed that he was killed by numerous shotgun pellets.
