TMC MP Mahua Moitra is set to appear before the Lok Sabha’s Ethics Committee, which is investigating “cash-for-query” allegations made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey against her. Dubey accuses Moitra of posing questions through her parliamentary account on behalf of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for favors from a Dubai-based business scion. Notably, sources have alleged that her parliamentary account was accessed from Dubai approximately 47 times.
Moitra has acknowledged sharing her login details with Hiranandani, a close friend, but she denies any financial motivation, insisting that the questions were her own. Dubey, on the other hand, claims that sharing parliamentary login credentials with an outsider compromises national interests and demands action based on the agreement MPs sign to keep such details confidential.
Dubey cited “media reports” indicating 47 log-ins from Hiranandani’s Dubai location, suggesting that Hiranandani was asking questions in Parliament for his benefit. The Ethics Committee has sought assistance from the Union ministries of home and information technology to investigate this matter.
Further complicating matters for Moitra is an affidavit from Hiranandani, confessing to giving bribes for her to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi with her questions. Moitra argues that Hiranandani was coerced by the government into filing the affidavit and seeks to question him during her appearance before the panel, although this is an unusual practice in such parliamentary panels.
She claims that the Adani Group is behind these allegations, which she describes as “bogus,” due to her strong criticism of the business conglomerate.
