Three local courts situated within the district court complex in Thalassery have been temporarily shut down for a duration of two days in response to a suspected virus outbreak. Approximately 55 individuals, comprising judicial officers, court personnel, and lawyers, exhibited symptoms such as uneasiness, fever, and itching over the course of the past 10 days. As a precautionary measure, the High Court issued directives to close these courts to prevent potential disease transmission.
A medical team, under the leadership of Dr. M. P. Jeeja, the District Medical Officer (DMO) of Kannur, conducted an on-site visit and collected samples from the affected individuals for laboratory testing. Dr. Jeeja remarked, “Preliminary medical inspection suggests virus transmission. However, we can conclude the same only after receiving the lab report of samples collected from the patients.” She further mentioned that samples from 23 patients have been dispatched to the National Institute of Virology laboratory in Alappuzha to confirm the presence of the virus.
The decision to close the courts came after the additional sessions judge and principal sub-judge sought medical treatment for their ailments on Wednesday, which subsequently prompted other staff members to report experiencing similar symptoms. The closure will affect the Additional Sessions Court 2 and 3, along with the Principal Sub Court, and will remain in effect on Thursday and Friday as confirmed by the court authorities.
