Coalition MLAs meet with Eknath Shinde to discuss Maratha quota

On Friday, Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, presided over a gathering of ruling coalition lawmakers discussing the matter of Maratha reservation.

During the one and a half-hour meeting, Shinde briefed the legislators from the Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) about the government’s actions taken to meet the demand.

The Chief Minister emphasized that all of the state’s district magistrates (DM) have been directed to make sure that there is coordination in the distribution of Kunbi caste certificates to qualified Marathas.

Notably, Manoj Jarange Patil, a Maratha quota activist, had this as one of his main demands.

Shinde went on to say that the government has expanded its efforts to find the Kunbi community’s records. Previously, it was limited to eight states.

A committee consisting of three members was established by the government to develop policies regarding the issuance of caste certificates.

He continued by saying that the committee has been given permission to extend its working hours and that the government will supply the necessary staff.

An IAS officer will be appointed by the state government to work with each DM and provide a weekly progress report.

Shinde also told the lawmakers that in order to expedite the work of the state Backward Classes Commission, the government has chosen to enlist the assistance of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

In order to prevent a reaction in the state, he also asked the MLAs to accept the government’s decision among the residents of their constituencies.

Due to violent protests over the demand for Maratha quota, many MLAs have been in Mumbai over the past few days.

For the past two days, a large number of people have also protested at the state assembly building, Vidhan Bhavan, and the administrative seat of the state, Mantralaya.

A couple of them also submitted their resignations in protest to the Maratha quota’s demands.
