Indian vice-captain Hardik Pandya’s journey in the World Cup came to an unexpected halt due to an ankle injury sustained last month. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made this announcement while officially approving Prasidh Krishna as Pandya’s replacement.
Pandya’s ankle injury occurred when he attempted to block a shot with his foot during India’s victory over Bangladesh in Pune on October 19. As a result, he had to miss several matches, including those against England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. During his time on the field, Pandya had been a key contributor, claiming five crucial wickets in India’s first three World Cup matches.
In light of Pandya’s absence, Prasidh Krishna, an experienced pace bowler with 17 One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches under his belt, has been chosen to fill his shoes. Krishna has a notable record, with a total of 33 wickets to his name in international cricket. However, he will face stiff competition from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj for a spot in India’s pace line-up.
Despite the challenges posed by Pandya’s absence, Team India, already through to the semifinals, has displayed resilience and currently leads the table with seven wins from seven matches. Their next test comes against second-placed South Africa in Kolkata on Sunday. As they continue their World Cup journey, the Indian cricket team is determined to maintain their winning streak.
