In response to a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department for Idukki, District Collector Sheeba George has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid nighttime travel. Various departments, including the Police, Fire and Rescue, and Revenue, have been instructed to take necessary measures. This action was prompted by the raising of two shutters at Kallar Dam by 10 cm at 7:45 pm due to water levels surpassing the red alert threshold.
District Collector Sheeba George, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority, has issued warnings to residents along the banks of both Kallar and Chinnar rivers, emphasizing the need for extra vigilance. Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred in Santhanpara Panchayat, where a farm worker lost his life when the wall of his house collapsed while he was asleep. This incident was one of three landslides that took place in the Cheriyar-Dalam region of Santhanpara on Sunday night, leading to the relocation of 25 people, including out-of-state laborers, to relief camps.
The landslides in Santhanpara, Udumbanchola, and Pambadumpara areas have caused extensive damage to agricultural land, with approximately 25 hectares of farmland being washed away. This included 15 hectares designated for cardamom cultivation. The district administration is currently gathering further information regarding losses in the agricultural sector.
