Aspiring UP Police officer becomes bus driver; spouse acts as conductor to help her

After completing her studies, a postgraduate lady who was training to become a Delhi Police officer decided to become a bus driver for the Uttar Pradesh roads, with her husband acting as a conductor. Now an inspiration to other women, Ved Kumari encouraged them to take on the role without fear.

A bus on the Kaushambi-Ghaziabad to Budaun route has been allotted to Kumari and her spouse, Mukesh Prajapati.

Kumari, who holds an MA in Sanskrit, stated that she saw the job posting for the driver while getting ready for an interview with the Delhi Police.

Ved Kumari received heavy vehicle driving training from the Model Driving Training and Research Institute in Kanpur in 2021 with funding from the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) under the Skill Development Mission. In April 2023, she was sent for a 10-month training program at the Kaushambi depot. On the route from Kaushambi-Ghaziabad to Budaun, she was the first women driver.

Ved Kumari is the mother of a daughter enrolled in lower kindergarten and a boy enrolled in class 10. The older son looks after their daughter while the driver-conductor duo works hard at their jobs.

Kumari is employed on a contract basis right now. She does not think, though, that she should be terrified of anything related to her work.

‘Women can achieve anything they set their minds to, and no task is too difficult,’ the speaker asserted.
