‘Benami’ assets belonging to Atiq Ahmed linked to Prayagraj purchased under mason’s name

The Uttar Pradesh Police confiscated the benami property valued at Rs 12.5 crore belonging to the deceased politician and thug Atiq Ahmed on Monday in the Katahula region of Prayagraj. The 5.0510 hectares of stolen land were bought and registered under the name Hoob Lal, a mason.

The mason told authorities that his men had terrified poor farmers with force and registered their farms in Hoob Lal’s name at the insistence of Atiq Ahmed. He claims that the land was registered in his name and that it was purchased under duress from 14 farmers for a pittance.

‘The property’s registry was made in my name after Atiq’s men threatened the farmers. I don’t even know how much land is actually in my name. I want to appeal to the police to use the land for constructing hospitals, schools and more for the poor,’ Hoob Lal told the media.

Hoob Lal lives at Lalapur, which is 60 kilometers from Prayagraj city.

He claims that Atiq forced the purchase of the land from fourteen Dalit farmers. Hoob Lal told the police that the property was registered in his name because he was a Dalit as well.

‘In 2015, 16 pieces of land of 5.0510 hectares in area, that belonged to 14 Dalit farmers, were registered in my name,’ Hoob Lal stated.

Hoob Lal stated that the names of the 14 farmers were: Dubasa, Munshi Lal, Mahadev Prasad, Premchandra, Rajesh, Sanwariya, Dilip Kumar, Mahesh Kumar, Rahul Kumar, Gyanendra Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, Ram Babu, Shiv Babu, Shyam Babu, and Sanwariya.

The property is estimated to be worth Rs 12.5 crore, according to Varun Kumar, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for Dhumanganj, as reported by news agency PTI.

The government has declared that this property has been seized, according to the ACP. Legal action will now be initiated against the occupants.

Police found that Hoob Lal possesses two properties that are his ancestral lands after looking into him. He is the beneficiary of his family’s monthly handouts from his Below Poverty Line (BPL) card.

The police looked into the financial accounts of Hoob Lal and his wife.

On April 15, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, who have been mentioned in over 100 criminal cases, were shot and killed at close range.

The incident occurred as police officers were transporting three men—posing as journalists—to a hospital for a medical examination.
