The initial phase of Chhattisgarh’s assembly elections, encompassing 20 seats, is scheduled for Tuesday. This phase will encompass polling in various constituencies, notably the Naxal-affected Bastar division. The voting window will range from 7 am to 3 pm in 10 seats, specifically Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Konta. For Khairagarh, Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Pandariya, and Kawardha Bastar, Jagdalpur, and Chitrakot, the voting hours will be from 8 am to 5 pm.
Of these 20 seats, the Congress presently holds 19, including two secured in bypolls. In the 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress emerged victorious in 17 of these 20 seats, with the BJP clinching two, and the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh securing one. The subsequent phase of elections, encompassing 70 seats, is slated for November 17. In this initial phase, the future of 223 candidates, including 25 women, will be determined by an estimated 4,078,681 voters, comprising 1,993,937 male, 2,084,675 female, and 69 individuals identifying as a third gender. An extensive network of 5,304 polling booths has been established for the first phase.
