Global Citizen Festival’s latest initiative, Move Afrika, is set to feature renowned rapper Kendrick Lamar as its headliner. This event, scheduled for December 6 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, marks a significant step in Global Citizen’s commitment to empowering African communities.
Kendrick Lamar’s role goes beyond being the headliner; his company, pgLang, led by Lamar and Dave Free, will play a pivotal role in curating the event. Furthermore, pgLang has committed to curating Move Afrika events for the next five years, ensuring a consistent flow of high-quality entertainment and cultural experiences.
Move Afrika is part of Global Citizen’s ongoing efforts to address global inequities and promote positive change. It seeks to create job and entrepreneurship opportunities for Africa’s emerging generations through a series of world-class live events.
The initiative’s scope extends beyond entertainment. It is committed to investing in community-provided health services for local communities, forming partnerships with local vendors, agencies, artists, and crews to offer valuable on-the-job skill development and training opportunities.
Move Afrika’s ambitious goals revolve around promoting equity through health, environmental, and economic policy objectives. Global Citizen emphasizes the importance of collective action, urging Global Citizens to call upon African leaders, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector to make significant commitments to strengthen health systems.
Kigali, Rwanda, will serve as the “anchor city” for the Move Afrika tour until 2028, with plans to expand to more countries on the tour schedule. Global Citizen aims to include four additional countries in the tour by 2025, extending the event’s reach and impact.
In addition to his involvement with Move Afrika, Kendrick Lamar has recently made headlines for collaborations such as his track with cousin and fellow rapper Baby Keem, “Hillbillies.” He also rerecorded a remix of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” for 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in late October. Kendrick delivered a powerful performance of “America Has a Problem (Remix)” with Beyonce during her birthday show on September 4.
