Gold smuggling: Swapna fined 6 crores; 50 lakhs to Shiv Shankar

In the ongoing diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case, M Sivasankar, the former principal secretary to the chief minister, and Swapna Suresh, the prime accused, have been directed by Kochi Customs Preventive Commissioner Rajendra Kumar to pay substantial fines. Sivasankar faces a fine of Rs 50 lakh, while Swapna Suresh has been ordered to pay an even larger sum of Rs 6 crore. Notably, a total of Rs 66.60 crore in fines has been imposed on 44 individuals, including two former diplomats from the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram. This action is a part of the Customs procedure related to the seizure of 30.245 kg of smuggled gold, valued at Rs 14.82 crore, from the Thiruvananthapuram cargo complex on July 5, 2020.

The fines extend to other key individuals involved in the case, including former Consul General of the UAE Consulate Jamal Hussain Al Sabi, former admin attaché Rashid Khamis Al Ashmei, P S Sarith, Sandeep Nair, and KT Rameez, who have also been directed to pay Rs 6 crore each. Furthermore, A M Jalal, P T Abdu, T M Muhammed Anwar, P T Ahamed Kutty, and Mohammed Mansoor face fines of Rs 1.5 crore each, while Mohammed Shameem has been fined Rs 1 crore. The remaining accused have received fines ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This development marks a significant development in the high-profile gold smuggling case.
