Illegal electric fence claims life of Idukki farmer on his own land

A tragic incident unfolded at Thannippara in Karuanppuram, under the jurisdiction of the Kambamettu police station, where a 52-year-old man met a fatal end through electrocution. The unfortunate event occurred at approximately 6 am on a Tuesday. The victim, identified as Ovelil Shaji, also known as Varghese Joseph, lost his life after stumbling and falling onto an unauthorized electric fence, which had been installed to deter wild boars from encroaching on his farmland.

According to accounts provided by the deceased’s close relatives, Shaji ventured near the electric fence on his property early in the morning with the intention of disconnecting the power supply that fed the fence. However, when he failed to return, his concerned family members began searching for him and subsequently discovered the distressing incident.

The Kambamettu police revealed that Shaji had set up an illegal electric fence comprising metal wires spanning approximately 100 meters. This fencing was established on his 2-acre cardamom farm to counteract the issue of wild boar intrusions. Significantly, the fence had been directly powered from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) post. His lifeless body was retrieved from the accident site following the deactivation of the power supply by the KSEB. Post-mortem procedures are slated to be conducted at Idukki Medical College to ascertain the cause of Shaji’s untimely demise.
