Youth stabbed to death by robbery gang in Thrissur

On Monday night near the Passport office in Diwanjimoola, a tragic incident unfolded as a gang of robbers launched a violent attack on a group of youths in an attempt to steal their bags. Sreerag, a 26-year-old from Olarikkara, lost his life in the altercation, while three others, including one of the accused, sustained injuries during the scuffle. According to reports from Manorama News, the gang, led by a man named Althaf, targeted the youths who were waiting for a friend near the Passport office. Their intention was to snatch the bags belonging to Sreerag and his companions. Tragically, when the victims resisted the robbery, the situation escalated, resulting in a series of stabbings that left Sreerag dead at the scene.

Sreerag, along with his brother Sreereg and friends Ajmal and Sreeraj, who worked as painting laborers, had recently returned from Kochi, arriving at the railway station around 11 pm on Monday night. Ajmal had briefly left to visit a relative’s house nearby, leaving the group vulnerable to the criminals’ attack. The robbers forcibly snatched their bags, presumably aiming to steal valuable items. When the youths bravely resisted this assault, the criminals resorted to using a knife, leading to a tragic outcome. The preliminary investigation revealed that it was Althaf who had stabbed Sreerag in the chest. It’s worth noting that Althaf also sustained injuries during the violent confrontation and is currently receiving treatment at Thrissur Co-operative Hospital. Furthermore, among the accused individuals, two were reported to be minors, as detailed by Manorama News. The case is now under investigation by a team led by the Thrissur ACP.

Diwanjimoola, particularly in the vicinity of the railway station, has gained a reputation as a hub for criminal activities during the nighttime. Recent incidents, such as a gang using a fake gun to threaten a man in a robbery attempt, have contributed to concerns about the safety of the area after dark.
