Nationwide ban on firecrackers, Not just Delhi-NCR: SC

The Supreme Court, in response to the severe air pollution in the national capital, has reiterated its nationwide regulations against the use of banned chemicals in firecrackers. The Court emphasized the need for responsible behavior during celebrations, stating that polluting the environment for the sake of festivities is a selfish act that should be collectively managed to control air and sound pollution. Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh, sitting on the bench, stressed that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of the judiciary and highlighted that they had previously issued orders to address air and noise pollution concerns.

Furthermore, the Court clarified that their earlier directives are binding on every state in the country, including Rajasthan, which is preparing for an election season. The bench emphasized that Rajasthan must take active measures to reduce air and noise pollution, not only during festivals but also beyond that period. The key to addressing this issue, the Court noted, lies in sensitizing the public.

In a previous ruling, the same bench had rejected petitions seeking permission for the manufacture and sale of firecrackers containing barium and joint fireworks. The Court had directed the Centre to instruct Delhi Police not to issue licenses for cracker sales in the city, emphasizing that the government’s ban implied a complete prohibition.
