P Balasubramanian Menon, a 97-year-old distinguished lawyer hailing from Palakkad, has etched his name into the annals of legal history by securing a coveted place in the Guinness Book of World Records. His remarkable career spans an astonishing 73 years and 60 days, a feat recognized by the Guinness World Records.
“The longest career as a lawyer (male) is 73 years and 60 days, and was achieved by Menon P Balasubramanian (India) as verified in Kerala, India, on 11 September 2023,” according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Despite his advanced age, Menon’s dedication to his profession remains unwavering. He continues to frequent his office and courtrooms daily, diligently meeting with clients. In his own words, “When a party approaches me with a case, he is coming by trusting me… I will do whatever I can do for them,” Menon shared with a television channel.
Hailing from a traditional family in Palakkad, Menon’s courtroom philosophy centers on brevity. He firmly believes in avoiding excessive arguments and lengthy cross-examinations.
Having embarked on his legal journey after completing his legal studies at the Madras Law College in the early 1950s, Menon shows no intention of retiring anytime soon. When asked about his retirement plans, he simply smiles and says, “I will continue my practice till my health permits and until my parties want me to…” His words serve as an inspiration for others in the legal profession, reinforcing the idea that dedication knows no age or boundaries.
