Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s comments regarding the significance of women’s education in population control sparked a verbal spat between Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Rekha Sharma, the chairman of the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The chief minister of Bihar gave a detailed account of how an educated woman might constrain her husband during sexual activity on Tuesday in the state assembly, all the while stressing the need of women’s education in managing the population.
Kumar’s remarks drew harsh criticism from the National Commission for Women (NCW), which characterised them as backward and incredibly insensitive to the rights and preferences of women. The NCW demanded an apology from the chief minister, claiming that his rude remarks had an impact on women all around the nation.
Apologies were made by Chief Minister Kumar for his statements on Wednesday. Chief NCW Rekha Sharma turned to social media to demand that Kumar issue a swift and sincere apology. She denounced his disparaging remarks and underlined the need of taking responsibility.
Sharma also tagged several well-known female leaders, asking them to denounce Kumar’s comments and demand an apology. These leaders included Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the Congress, and Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT).
‘It will be good if the champions of the women’s cause @priyankac19 @priyankagandhi @BDUTT @AtishiAAP and their friend join in to condemn and demand apology from @NitishKumar,’ Sharma posted.
Responding, Chaturvedi remarked that Sharma’s chair as NCW chief, which is supposed to be nonpartisan, is being severely harmed by his selective silence and selective activity.
‘My dear biased, politically motivated Madam, I do unequivocally condemn any language used for women which is derogatory-irrespective of my politics, even if it comes from an ally. I am also certain that Chief Minister will revisit his usage of words and apologise. Unfortunately as far as I recall, whenever we expected you to stand up for women, you chose selective silence and selectively action- doing a huge disservice to your chair as NCW which is supposedly nonpartisan,’ the MP replied.
Sharma told to Chaturvedi. ‘My not so Dear Priyanka ji do you remember how you showed your inability to do anything against a leader who was once upon a time in your party when I showed you all the proofs of his deeds? How unbiased you were…remember?’ Sharma said, without naming anyone.
