The Bihar Assembly’s recent decision to increase quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Extremely Backward Classes, and Other Backward Classes is a significant development. This adjustment, rising from the previous 50 percent to 65 percent, underscores the state’s commitment to addressing social and economic disparities.
The bills, formulated in response to an exhaustive caste survey carried out by the Nitish Kumar government, have garnered unanimous support as they passed through a voice vote. This move is a testament to the collective will of the assembly to promote inclusivity and equity in educational institutions and government employment.
The specific changes within the quotas are equally noteworthy. The quota for Scheduled Tribes will see a doubling, increasing from one to two percent, while for Scheduled Castes, it will rise from 16 percent to 20 percent. Extremely Backward Classes will now benefit from a 25 percent quota, up from the previous 18 percent, and Other Backward Classes will see their allocation increase from 12 percent to 15 percent. These adjustments are aimed at rectifying historical imbalances and fostering a more inclusive society.
