The Nagaland Assembly unanimously approved the Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023 on Thursday, introducing a significant change by reserving one-third of the seats within urban local bodies (ULBs) for women. However, it’s important to note that the new bill does not include provisions for one-third reservation of chairperson offices in ULBs for women, and it does not address taxes related to land and buildings.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio underlined that the decision to implement a 33 percent quota for women in ULBs was made in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court. He emphasized the vital role of women’s involvement in the administration of ULBs and expressed optimism that this move would yield positive and meaningful outcomes, especially given the rapid urbanization taking place in Nagaland.
