Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra expressed confidence in securing a larger mandate in 2024, following the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee’s recommendation for her expulsion over the “cash-for-query” issue. Moitra, in a post on X, criticized the committee’s process, stating, “Proud to go down in parliamentary history as 1st person to be unethically expelled by Ethics Comm whose mandate doesn’t include expulsion.”
Highlighting the perceived flaws in the proceedings, she added, “1st expel & THEN ask govt to ask CBI to find evidence. Kangaroo court, monkey business from start to finish.” Moitra seized the opportunity, stating, “Never Waste a Good Crisis they say… – this just helped me double my 2024 winning margin.”
The Ethics Committee, chaired by BJP’s Vinod Kumar Sonkar, recommended Moitra’s expulsion after a series of actions, including the deposition of three individuals. Sonkar reported that six members supported the 479-page report, while four opposed it, citing prejudice and inaccuracies. The dissenting members argued that businessman Darshan Hiranandani, accused of offering bribes to Moitra, should have been called to depose rather than submitting an affidavit.
